UPDATE:I am now a much happier camper now that I am on Book 7. The story is compelling. Some of the characters are more likable than others. At least one of them needs to be spanked.
I have been listening to Book 1 and then Book 2 on Audible. I also purchased book 3 on my kindle and audible. When that book ended, rather abruptly, when it had only played for 3 hours, I went to look up the versions of these books: What seemed like I kept getting interrupted to have to go buy more of the books turned out to be true.
It looks like the first 3 books of this series is about the size of one regular book. 4&5 make a second book and the 6, 7, & 8 are all about the length of regular, average, everyday books. The problem is that the first 4 books, bought as kindle and audible, cost about $18. That just bugs me.

Now if I had been enjoying these books and not felt the characterization left a lot to be desired, I might not have noticed. But the father getting killed by zombies in the first chapter (or book), while is family is taking off on a boat and the mother feeling resistant to also sacrifice herself for their children, left me a little nonplussed. Luckily her children did not need her sacrifice because they wouldn't have gotten it. But it is not very long before she is flirting with the boat captain, playfully laughing about needing tampons. Really?
Interestingly, her absence of grief left me a more incredulous than zombies did.

Deadlocked is one of those books I downloaded for free from ages ago. I’ve forgotten I had it on my until I paged through the books on my e-reader looking for a quick bedtime read. I didn’t even read the book summary, so I had no idea what this novella was about until I started reading it. Zombies. Nope, not interested. I’ve read too many zombie books and I’m tired of the same old story over and over again. If this was a full-length novel, I might have just deleted it from my , but I’m glad I gave it a chance. Though it doesn’t offer anything new as far as zombie stories go (despite what the author’s note claims at the end), I thought this was a great start to a zombie series, because the author took a lot of time developing his characters (as much as one can for a novella). I don’t think, though, I’ll be reading the rest of the series. I’ve had my fill of apocalypses featuring the living dead for now. Maybe one day, when I’m in the mood for an end of the world zombie story again, I might continue reading this series.
Wow is all I can say about the first installment of the DEADLOCKED SERIES. This is David's story and what he would do to get to back to his wife and girls.
A.R takes us on a rollercoaster ride in this novella. He grabs you from the very first page and takes us right into the danger and trials of one man and his flight to get home to save them. A.R sets us up from the very beginning and just keeps adding to the terror that is going on. There is so much going on as the zombie apocalypses starts. The paranoia that goes along with it.
I know that it was just a novella David's story but I got hooked. I can't wait to read more . Laura's story will be a good one to read . and whatever happened to the policemen on the pontoon. These are all questions that are coming up as you read. I hope that I can figure out everyone and see if they will survive.
This book is reminisced of the Walking Dead, with the survivors doing anything that will help them survive. So if you like THE WALKING DEAD you will like DEADLOCKED.

At first, I thought this story was pretty good, but it started getting a little too "out there", as in "not really believable" when it came to one survivor trying to get home and all the things that happen to him that he just squeaks out of in really odd ways. I understand that "zombies" are not real but the story has to have some events that you do not have to "suspend belief for" to relate to it. But I was really disappointed in the ending. I just felt like the author ran out of ideas and used a really bad cliche` and terribly unbelievable way to end the story. I realize this is supposed to be just the beginning and you have to buy another book for the rest of the story, but when it got near the end I had to FORCE myself to finish it, hoping it would turn around and get a little better ending. I really expected that because the author was so inventive in the "escapes" he managed for David. But this one just lost me about 3/4's of the way through. If it's on the free list and you will read any kind of a zombie story, then try it. But I wouldn't pay for it.
My 5 star ratings are books I enjoy reading from authors the first time or rereading from authors I am familiar with. I also rate a book 5 stars if the descriptions hit on several emotion layers at once. I like for my horror to make me laugh and smile, not just always feel squeamish.
In this book the main character has alot of personal issues to deal with and then he he suddenly thrust into a situation that is unexplainable. He does not quite know what is going on but he knows he has to get to his family and keep them safe.
Most zombie apocalypse novels. Even if the main character is Joe Blow, when the outbreak happens, he becomes a superhero. Defeating all, never succumbing to injury. The difference in DEADLOCKED is very apparent and shocking. It had me looking forward to the next book in the series about halfway through this book.
